In Disctopia, we distinguish between downloads, plays, listens, and what we call "TruePlays™" using our technology. For podcasts, the historical metric is downloads, since most podcasts are true downloads. A podcast listening app, aka a podcatcher, may not differentiate between a download and play, since they were constructed during a technological era that didn't distinguish between them. Disctpia players and our APIs can determine true plays as distinct from downloads. Our technology automatically determines unique downloads, plays, and listens.
Content marked or labeled "Exclusive to Disctipia" will be paid according to the agreement. Typically, this ranges from 0.02 to 0.05.
Definitions
-
Download
-
The term "download" refers to the process of downloading or listening through a podcatcher or listening app. A download will be counted if someone plays your podcast in Apple Podcasts, for example. Podcasters typically use "downloads" to measure how many people are listening to their shows.
-
-
Play
-
It can either be played through the Disctopia embeddable podcast player (typically on your site) or through your own app (if it uses Disctopia SDKs and APIs).
-
-
Listen
-
Listening refers to either downloading or playing from a listening source. This is based on the number of downloads and plays combined with uniqueness so that there is no duplication.
-
Different podcast players count differently.
Spotify requires at least 60 seconds (IAB Standard Play). Apple Podcasts counts "unique devices that played more than 0 seconds of an episode." It doesn't include all Apple devices! Only devices running iOS 11 or iTunes 12.7 or later (and Homepod) are included. Additionally, their data can be delayed by up to 72 hours. This is the number of times a user listened to this episode for at least 5 seconds on that day in Google Podcasts.
Disctopia gives you a true picture of your play data, such as IAB, Engaged, and True Plays.
